Extension of container terminal and study for rail logistics in the Port of Fredericia (GreenFRED-LOG)
The project will be implemented during February 2024 - March 2026. It mainly includes works to increase the capacity of the container terminal by reclaiming land in the port internal basin. It also develops a study for the integration of rail-maritime transports, to provide all necessary assessments, design and construction tender documents.
The project’s main benefits are strengthening the role of the port of Fredericia as logistic platform, increasing handling efficiency, solving bottlenecks, improving connectivity and links to the TEN-T network. The increased capacity will lead to a modal shift to short sea shipping and reduced road traffic. The works and the study will contribute to avoided congestion, climate objectives, lower emissions, as well as reduced accident risks and noise. Indirectly, the capacity extension will accelerate the electrification of the terminal operations. Overall, the investment supports the sustainability and decarbonization of long-distance transport chains.
Extension of the container terminal
The project will provide an extension of the container terminal (behind quay no. 19) by landfilling a former port bay. In addition, the existing area will be upgraded to ensure continuity and proper conditions for the enlargement.
- The works include all necessary end-layer land filling, levelling, ground compression, structural works, final surface and concrete works, asphalt and concrete pavements, installation of utilities and a suitably dimensioned rainwater management system. Furthermore, a noise wall will be constructed to mitigate noise impacts.
- The new container area will be built adjacent to the existing one in Vesthavnen, which will be upgraded to ensure continuity for pavements and a suitable rainwater management.
The project will eliminate an existing basin, as the layout no longer matches the size of the vessels. The area will provide a larger and efficient container terminal with minimized internal logistics. Overall, the existing and new area covered by the works is approx. 98,000 m2. The total areas for container handling in the container terminal ad quay areas will be almost doubled to 150,000 m2.
Study for rail logistics
The study enables the future construction of transshipment facilities for intermodal rail services to/from the port of Fredericia. In particular, it supports the integration of maritime and rail modes for unitized cargo and enables a final investment decision regarding the necessary works.
The port aims to establish intermodal handling facilities for containers and trailers. To achieve this, some rail facilities in the North of the container terminal would need to be reconstructed and connected with the port areas.
It will also create a strong cooperation platform for stakeholders to develop rail services and suitable handling conditions.
The planned handling facilities will enable units to be loaded/unloaded from on trains, to/from the Taulov Dry Port and even longer distances.
Part of the study, the port will analyze the technical possibilities, prepare the design, construction tender specifications and the required environmental analysis.
EU-funding
The project was approved to receive a CEF grant of 6 754 520 EUR, which supports and accelerates implementation. The extension of the container quay is implemented in parallel.
